In mid-April, a 23-year-old Nevada man received a hefty sentence for his role in a drunk driving accident that claimed the lives of two Henderson teenagers more than a year ago.
According to court documents, Seong Mo Lee, who was sentenced in Clark County District Court to 12 to 30 years in prison, was driving with a blood-alcohol twice the legal limit when his Mercedes ran a red light and struck the victims’ Nissan Versa back in March 2015.
Both girls in the Nissan, Gabriell Thomas and Kamesha Gilmore, were killed in the wreckage.
During his sentencing, Lee apologized to the victims’ families, as well as to the victims themselves, for his negligent actions.
Unfortunately, cases like this are not uncommon. Neither are cases involving negligence, like driving under the influence or while distracted – behavior that can be prevented when drivers exercise reasonable caution. Failure to do so risks serious personal injury, or even death, for any parties involved.
Car Accident Injuries in Nevada
Such incidents form an all-too-serious reality in the state of Nevada, which ranks in the top ten nationwide for car accidents. In fact, it is estimated that Nevada sees approximately 50,000 car accident injuries every year.
However, it’s important to note that the rate of car accidents does not just refer to accidents involving two vehicles. In Nevada, it is quite common for car accidents to involve multiple vehicles, or even bicycles or pedestrians.
Additionally, because the state is such a sought-after destination for out-of-state travelers and tourists, it is also common for accidents to involve out-of-state vehicles or drivers. This can sometimes prove difficult in personal injury cases, since Nevada has it’s own laws regarding auto insurance – every driver in the state is required to carry it.
New Guidelines for Police
Over the course of the last year the Last Vegas Metro Police has revealed new guidelines for responding to minor car accidents. Under these guidelines, police will not respond to ‘fender bender’ incidents that do not result in personal injury, which means that drivers need to exercise additional caution when collecting information after an incident.
